Taekwondo (pronounced /ˈtaiˈkwɒnˈdoʊ/, or Korean [tʰɛk͈wʌndo]) is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. It is the world's most popular martial art in terms of the number of practitioners.[1] and Gyeorugi, one type of sparring, is an Olympic event.

In Korean, tae (Hangul: 태, hanja: 跆) means "to strike or break with foot"; kwon (Hangul: 권, hanja: 拳) means "to strike or break with fist"; and do (Hangul: 도, hanja: 道) means "way"/"art"/"method"; so Taekwondo is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist" but some translate it as, "the art of kicking and punching," although the meaning of the Korean word "do" does not correspond to the meaning of the English word "art".

Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the varied evolution of the martial art into several domains: as with many other arts, it combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, meditation and philosophy. Taekwondo is also used by the South Korean military as part of its training.[2]

Traditional Taekwondo is typically not competition-oriented[citation needed] but stems from military roots with great emphasis on offense. Modern Taekwondo, on the other hand, tends to emphasize control and self-defense. Formally, there are two main styles of Taekwondo. One comes from the Kukkiwon, the source of the sparring system sihap gyeorugi which is now an event at the summer Olympic Games and which is governed by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

  • it's the fighter

  • what blurrocka said is true

and you the deem0N , check out the original traditional style of muay thai , I dont remeber its name rigth now ,

  • its not the style its the fighter. there is no deadliest or best style.

  • yea but this is the best martial art because it actually is an art... the skill and kicks in taekwondo are beautiful

  • The BEST type of Martial Arts, Hands Down is Jeet Kune Do which is a style that was Developed by Bruce Lee because the Asian Elders would not let him teach the original styles to "Gwai Lo" or "Gwailo" ("Gwai Lo" is any White Man or Women, Black Man or Woman, Latino Man or Woman...It's anyone who isn't Asian...) but I'd say the most Deadly kind of martial arts is probably Muay Thai (Thailand style Kickboxing)
