@beckyflute18 I've had jaw pain a couple times but that only comes when I play for at least three hours

@Maixa02 once you get a grasp for double tonguing in the low octave the high octave should also be responsive as long as the aperture remains relaxed without excess motion. If you are having difficulty it might be an air speed issue, make sure you are using enough abdominal support to create the air speed you need in the high register. I think as long as you are relaxed in the face and using the right kind of air you should be able to double tongue anything

Something I have found helpful when practicing double tonguing on the Bach CM, the back of the tongue seems a lot less coordinated so I do the whole exercise single tongued on T/D, single tongued on K/G then tongued backwards.. KTKT and finally forward TKTK.. I feel like it helps the back of my tongue catch up to the speed of the tip of my tongue. It kind of goes hand in hand with Nina's first articulation video. Just a thought, hope it helps somebody :D

Can you give me some tips on tonguing? I've always played my flute without tonguing for about 3 years now and i've gotten into the habit. I try to tongue but i can't get it to move fast enough so it sounds really bad....can you help me?

Hi Nina, I watched all of your articulation videos in hopes for some depth into lower register double tonguing. Should there be more, less tongue movement? Air? My lesson teacher has given me several pieces with double tonguing, and it's been frustrating!

I noticed in the close up that you play with your top lip a little pulled to your left. I have a very off center embourchure, but it doesn't affect my sound. Between practicing and a preexisting TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problem, I have a constantly tight jaw. It starts to hurt after only a half hour of playing, and by an hour I have to take a break. Have you experienced any jaw soreness as a result of an off center embouchure? Thanks!

@beckyflute18 I do play with an off set embouchure, just like Rampal, but never had jaw pain.

hi nina. this is the first time i ve heard of you. Yet, u seem to contradict at least half of what i was taught. its very interesting. ONe thing i would appreciate you clarify is, you know how people tell you to roll in when playing low and out when high? in the close up of ur embochure i didnt notice any rolling. so are we meant to roll?

4gottenlv: I disagree about the rolling in and out! Rolling in to play the low register will usually make the notes fail to come out, causing the player to roll in more, making it worse until the player smashes the flute against the wall in frustration. Rolling out in the top register is just a way to make the player resist the temptation to roll in for high notes. IMHO the flute should stay more or less in position with only minor minor adjustments occasionally for intonation.

I use this exercise in my teaching as well for double tonguing. I think maybe it was Debost? Baker? (I can't remember)but one of our great flute pedagogues said that he used this every day as a double tonguing exercise.

jrbrook76: I learned this specifically from Marion in Paris but using the Baker and Brad Garner also used the C Major to practice articulation although I don't know if they used the tongueless method or the double stroke method with it.
