No, they are fitting him with a gas mask. Neither side used poison gas on the battlefield in WWII, but there was great concern that it would be used as it had in WWI. Both sides had stockpiles of gas ready--even near the front lines--but both sides knew that if they used it, the other side would as well.
It took 4 years for countries to turn from a peacetime industry to a wartime industry. Germany had been Arming for years, Britain started in 1938 although our modern fighter like the Spitfire and Hurricane were already being produced. Germany only had 2 engined Bombers designed for a European with light bomb loads. Britain had laid down plans for 4 engined Bombers in 1938 which came on stream in 1942. The Lancaster Bomber carried by far the heaviest bomb load of any Bomber during WW2.
If Hitler had attacked the USA, just how would you have defended yourselves. Your Armed forces were under equipped. You were not ready for war in 1939. Britain'S Army was weak, it's Airforce was small but growing with two of the Finest fighters in the World and we had the advantage of the worlds only Radar Defence network. Our Navy was still by far the biggest in the world. The only reason you were ready in 1942 was because your industry had been supplying us with Arms.
I am afraid I must disagree too danaoja. The blame for WWII outbreak must be placed between two countries Nazi germany and Soviet Russia. By signing Ribbenttrop Molotov Pact both countries agreed to divide Europe between themselves. Half of Poland, France, Belgium, Holland, Norway to Germany, another half of Poland, Finland, Baltic states, Romania to USSR. Both perpetrated horrible crimes in occupied territories, cooperated closely in war affairs, especially when USSR supplied Germany.
With practically everything Germans needed to wage the war against the free world. French campaign, Dunkirk, Battle of Britain wouldn't happen without Russian help because Germans were sea locked by Royal Navy and simply couldn't carry on without those supplies. Only because Hitler broke the Pact and attacked USSR, Russians were forced to fight against nazis. Otherwise they would assist Nazis in killing, gassing, torturing till today. Sad but true unfortunately...
If Pearl Harbor had not been attacked there is every chance that the U.S. would have stayed out of the war ,but that is not what F.D.R. and Churchill wanted. It is now accepted as highly probable that the inner circle turned a blind eye to the forthcoming Japanese attack. If you wiki "Pearl Harbor advance knowledge" you will find that a lot of the top brass knew what was going on but were ignored. Also a lot of the info has been declassified. War means pain for the many, but profit for the few.
