I was too young to see this commercial, but I know what you mean. I was a young kid in the early 80's. I think the ad was actually more realistic than the cartoons. I wrote some extra comments on the animation style (at that time).

really until 82 & 83 that animation became exciting again. Some cartoons updated the Hanna-Barberra budget style, making it more erealistic (Masters of the universe). OthersZ Borrowed from the Feature length Don Bluth movies (Space Ace, Dragon's lair). eBSome cartoons were using fluid comic-book style animation (like this commercial, Dearly G.I. Joe,-& alot later- Dinoriders, Visionaries etc), others were mixing anime influenced

drawings (especially with detail of machines & background) with American Comic book style animation (detail of characters, facial expression) like later G.I. Joe, C.O.P.S. etc. Even Thundercats (which had more of a detailed anime influence, also borrowed somewhat from American comic book style. ****80's= innovation.
