While almost everyone has an opinion on Israel and Palestinians, hardly anyone is paying attention to the current tragedy in Sir Lanka. If it wasnt for the persistent protests from the Tamil community, I wouldnt have known much about the issue. Interestingly, the protests has been mostly of only people from the Tamil community, there has not been much interests or attention from other ethnic groups to act in solidarity with the Tamil people living in Canada. Perhaps, any conflicts outside of the middle east is not considered strategically important or politically/economically significant.

The Tamil Tiger, like the Hamas , has been labeled as a terrorist groups. They are currently being killed by the by government of Sir Lanka. . Both sides accuse the other of these deaths. The Tigers put them down to artillery shelling by the government army. The army says the Tigers fire into the camps so they can blame the army.

Similarly, like Israel, the government of sir Lanka has continue to ignore the calls for ceasefire by the International Aids agency and the United Nation. Similarly , like the massacre in Gaza, the government of Sir Lanka has banned any independent journalists to report on the number of cvillian deaths and displacement of civillians from the designated safe zone.: . Human Rights Watch has characterized the Sri Lankan government as one of the worlds worst perpetrators of enforced disappearances.

. Some 6,500 civilians have been killed since January, and another 100,000 are caught facing carnage, and without adequate food, shelter and medicine in the crossfire between the Tigers and government forces. An additional 40,000 or so that have fled the war zone are being held in military-run camps, where conditions, according to the most recent reports, are similar to those in Nazi-run concentration camps (journalists and humanitarian workers have been banned from these camps for over a month).

It is too easy for everyone to blame the Tamil Tigers, or any other insurgency forces such as the Hamas or Hezbolla, because truth be told, these insurgents have committed brutal acts, such as suicide bombing and turning children into child soilders.

But again, it is important to take the context into consideration. Its origins may be traced to the effects of the nefarious divide and rule policies devised by British colonial administrators to govern Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The British used the islands Tamil minority to keep its Sinhalese majority in check, and in return, gave Tamils the best government jobs and the benefit of English education. With independence in 1948, however, the Tamils were deprived of their patrons, and found themselves outnumbered and marginalized inside the new Sri Lankas unitary state and majoritarian institutional framework. With the Tamils rendered politically irrelevant, short-sighted politicians competed with each other for the Sinhalese vote, and soon discovered that the political party with the stronger anti-minority stance was almost always guaranteed electoral success. onsideration.

The government of Sri Lankan cannot military aggression to seek a permanent solution to its Tamil minority problem.

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) military offensive into the so-called safe zone on 20 April 2009 began when the SLA fired artillery shells that released a white gas that knocked the civilians unconscious. When they awoke they were being herded towards the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) forward defense lines.
After the 20th April incident the GoSL set up the Arunachalam Camp in Vavuniya District for 6,000 people. In Jaffna District, Kodikamam Camp and the Sarawathi School Camp received approximately 20,000 persons. Where are these 54,000 other persons?

  • thank u

  • Well analysts have said that a lot of the damage could only have been caused by aerial bombardment (bomber jets). Since LTTE did not possess them, we can confidently say that they were SL gov jets. Secondly LTTE firing posiions were found within the safe zones, so its unlikely that the LTTE were firing on themselves. Yes, LTTE shouldnt have been there. But killing 20,000 (or at least 7000) to kill 200 cadres (gov figure) is not justifiable on any level.

  • So it's not proof at all? Both the LTTE (before they were beaten) and SL Army have access to heavy weapons, if there is no smoking gun how can you assign blame to one side?
