Nam Ngum Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Nam Ngum river, a tributary of the Mekong River. The dam is approx. 90 km north of Vientiane, on route 13 to Luang Prabang. The Dam was completed in 1971 with two turbines having a capacity of 30 megawatts. Today, with five turbines in place, the dam has a capacity of 960 megawatts. The electricity generated benefits most of the country with about 80% being exported to Thailand. The resulting reservoir, named Ang Nam Ngum, is 250 sq. km. and is a popular destination with floating restaurants moored near the dam at the village of Ban Thalat.. Hundreds of islets are scattered all over the lake, with pleasure boats available to hire for cruising the waters........
