The FDA's New and Improved Cigarette Warning Labels

The US Food and Drug Administration recently unveiled nine graphic warning labels that will appear on US cigarette packs in 2012. Some of the more gruesome labels include images of diseased lungs and tracheotomy holes. According to the FDA, these labels are "the most significant advancement in communicating the dangers of smoking and the first change in cigarette warnings in more than 25 years."

Will the graphic labels reduce smoking? Do Americans really need to be reminded that smoking isn't good for them?

@CnRDirt They know you know that it's bad for you, they are trying to get you to quit to save money. Tobacco use costs the US government about $200 billion dollars a year think about all that money lost that could otherwise be used for our schools, fire, police, hospitals and to make our community safer. That's why the government cares. The government doesn't care that smoking kills you, they care that smoking kills the economy!

The government, FDA, NIH etc don't give a crap if someone dies a slow and painful death, what they care about is the billions and billions of dollars ($200 billion to be exact) lost each year to cover tobacco related illness.
