This is dedicated to my wonderful guy - David !
Doris Day sings A Wonderful Guy from South Pacific on her 1960 Showtime album. I think Doris Day would have been the perfect star for the 1958 movie version of South Pacific. Can't you see her as Nellie ? Ah - what we missed out on, it would have been perfection !
South Pacific debuted on Broadway in 1949 - won 10 Tony's and ran for 5 years. It is on Broadway again and is up for just as many Tony's again. The movie version from 1958 won 1 Oscar.

  • Hate it when it's not actually a video. If I wanted to hear just a song, I'd listen to the radio.

  • @rad2791 Well ... i guess thats what you should do then.....there are radio's everywhere !

  • A recent video game uses this song -- Fallout 3. There's a radio station you can tune into in the game (that repeats the same songs, loaded from the disc), and this is one of them, but not by Doris Day, I suspect.

  • My fantasy has always been Doris opposite Mario Lanza in South Pacific. Imagine that soundtrack album!

  • Anybody know where these lyrics come from? The second half of the intro is different from what appears in the musical, as far as I'm aware.

  • Yes --- I think dear Marty had a hand in her not getting the role. Too bad...they should have paid her whatever "he" wanted ! I think Mitzi was fine ... but Doris was the perfect Nellie !

  • Richard Rodgers wanted Doris for the lead in the film, and when he heard this recording, made two years after the film, he threatened his friendship with producer Josh Logan for not hiring her. (Money was the reason, bu Rodgers was interested in the art of the film.)

  • I've gotten some flack here - because - I think Doris would have been the perfect Nellie !!!! I'm with you 100% on that - no doubt - she would have been perfect.

    Thanks !!
