Hamburg (English: IPA: /ˈhæmbɜɹɡ/, German: pronounced [ˈhambʊʁk], local pronunciation [ˈhambʊɪç] Low German/Low Saxon: Hamborg [ˈhambɔːx]) is the second-largest city in Germany (after Berlin), and is the most populous non-capital city in the European Union. The city is home to approximately 1.8 million people, while the Hamburg metropolitan area (including parts of the neighboring Federal States of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein) has more than 4.7 million inhabitants. The port of Hamburg is the second-largest port in Europe (after that of Rotterdam), and the ninth-largest in the world.

Hamburg's official name is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (German: Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg).[2] It makes reference to Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League and as a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, also to the fact that Hamburg is a city-state and one of the sixteen Federal States of Germany.

Hamburg is a major transportation hub in northern Germany and became a media and industrial center with factories such as Blohm + Voss and Norddeutsche Affinerie. The radio and television broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk and publishers such as Gruner + Jahr and Spiegel-Verlag represent the important media industry in Hamburg. In total there are more than 120,000 enterprises. The city is a major tourist destination both for domestic and overseas visitors, receiving about 7.4 million overnight stays in 2007.
Die Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg (niederdeutsch Hamborg [ˈhambɔːχ]) ist als Stadtstaat ein Land der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, zweitgrößte Stadt Deutschlands, siebtgrößte der Europäischen Union sowie die größte Stadt in der Europäischen Union, die nicht die Hauptstadt eines Mitgliedsstaates ist.

Der Wahlspruch Hamburgs lautet: Libertatem quam peperere maiores digne studeat servare posteritas (Die Freiheit, die erwarben die Alten, möge die Nachwelt würdig erhalten) und findet sich als Inschrift über dem Portal des Rathauses. Die latinisierte Form des Stadtnamens (etwa in der Stadthymne) ist Hammonia.
A Cidade Livre e Hanseática de Hamburgo (em alemão: "Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg" ou "Hamburg", em baixo-alemão "Hamborg" [ˈhaˑmbɔːχ]) é uma cidade-estado (Stadtstaat) localizado no norte da Alemanha, nas margens do Rio Elba. Em 31 de dezembro de 2004, possuia 1.734.830 habitantes e 755,33 km² , que a faz a segunda maior no país e a oitava maior da União Européia. A "Região Metropolitana de Hamburgo" tinha em 1997 4.014.800 habitantes. O porto é um dos maiores do mundo e, segundo estimativas, ultrapassará Rotterdam como o principal da Europa. A cidade é também um centro industrial de grande importância. Situa-se entre os estados (Bundesländer) de Schleswig-Holstein e Baixa Saxônia.

Além de cidade-estado (Stadtstaaten), cidade com estatuto de estado, Hamburgo é também uma cidade independente (Kreisfreie Stadt) ou distrito urbano (Stadtkreis), ou seja, possui estatuto de distrito (Kreis).
