you can buy a junked B-52 (or any Bomber thats N-Capable) but it cannot be flown...it has to be static only. a Dad and his son in Georgia restored a B-47 privatly and donated it to the 8th AF museum down there..it was inspected for compliance before it went on display.
Barksdale too..they also have one on thier "flight line' along with other SAC/ACC aircraft. RAF Heavies were a common sight at SAC bases...nice guys the RAF, real gentlemen.
Saw one of these at Farnborough in the mid 80's. A combination of sound and the look of the thing - this distinctive shape rolling on its side into silhoutte, combined to make the most dramatic performance.
I was stationed w/ an F4 fighter squadron in AZ in the early 70's. Our base hosted and airshow, and the Brits had one of their Vulcan bombers there. I swear I thought that it resembled a big fighter plane! I've loved the Vulcan every since that day!

I can still remember one taking off at RAF St Athan Airshow in the early nineties.
It was so loud that i'm sure it could shatter a pane of glass aswell as throwing you to the floor with the shock wave.
