Democracy Now!

PART 1 of 4
Censoring Science: Inside the Political Attack on Dr. James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming

Dr. James Hansen is widely regarded as the leading climate change scientist in the country. For the past twenty-five years, he has headed NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Just over a year ago, Dr. Hansen went public with a charge that made headlines around the world—that the Bush administration had been trying to silence his warnings about the urgent need to address climate change. His story is detailed in a new book by author Mark Bowen titled Censoring Science: Inside the Political Attack on Dr. James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming.

The increasing powers concentrated in the executive branch prove convenient for new administrations, so they do not give them up. It is perhaps more subtle in Democratic administrations, but they do not want or expect a scientist to present evidence that contradicts what they want people to believe. Our Founding Fathers would have tears in their eyes if they saw how the democratic process has been distorted.

A January 2007 report by the Union of Concerned Scientists regarding the $16 million public relations campaign to spread disinformation about global warming that has been waged over the past decade and more by oil giant ExxonMobil. According to the authors, this report "details how the oil company, like the tobacco industry in previous decades, has • raised doubts about even the most indisputable scientific evidence • funded an array of front organizations to create the appearance of a broad platform for a tight-knit group of vocal climate change contrarians who misrepresent peer-reviewed scientific findings • attempted to portray its opposition to action as a positive quest for 'sound science' rather than business self-interest • used its access to the Bush administration to block federal policies and shape government communications on global warming"

The Government Accountability Project produced a similar report in March 2007, called "Redacting the Science of Climate Change".

  • fantastic, i've seen the 60 minutes piece and that shocked me, looking forward to seeing the rest of this one.

  • There is a PlayList link under the "More info" option for the video. I make play lists for all multi part videos and put them at the end of each videos "More info" section. That should make it easy to watch them all. :)

  • @pchtermino lol it's funny how you think "the corporations" has a stranglehold on every scientist across the globe, it's hard being that stupid isn't it?

  • You people are sooooo stupid. There is no global warming, the corporations told us so.

  • the earth will kill u even with no input from man

  • It is illegal to yell fire in a theater unless there is a fire and it should be illegal to yell the earth is doomed with facts! Not projections, nor speculation, we need proof of MMGW.

  • It may be Global Dimming as well. If we get rid of the pollution or con trailing the world may heat up rapidly. The world water will evaporate more quickly and cause weather changes. The weather is going to change...........

  • Only one good thing that has come out of this administration. People are waking up! We used to believe that our gov't was looking out for our best interests. Now we know that's not the case. Thank you, George W. Bullshit, we couldn't have done it without you.

  • Hey... great idea. I'm going to post that playlist to my myspace account... get ready for some hits :)
