Normally if it is really rough, they close the decks to passengers. The roughest crossing I ever did was as a child, on a tiny old ferry [an ex steamer] called ''Falaise'' and the decks were closed as she heaved and rolled for what seemed lkr forever but was only 5hrs, Dieppe>Newhaven late august '69. we knew we were in for it as the little ship was rocking in the harbour. And the cars/lorries were lashed down, and chocks put under the wheels.

hello
Abrailsford.. it would have actually have been safer to stand outside the deck door, than to stand in it. The force blowing through the ship, and exiting at the doors is absolutely stupid, and is extrememly dangerous.

Thank you for all the comments, for all the doubters out there, this was the crossing where port in Santurtzi was closed for 24 hours and we were left 'hove too' in the open sea overnight, the wind did indeed reach a force 12 as confirmed by the ships master at the time, there were TV camera crews and press waiting for us on arrival in Santurtzi and on our return in Portsmouth.

fair comment jackalpaws, the risk was somewhat lowered as there is a wall of steel immediately behind me that rises to deck 9 toward the front of the ship so I was shielded from the force of the wind, also, only my arm with the camera was on deck, the rest of my body was inside the deck door.

Brave or stupid! couldn't resist getting the video, I was holding on to the deck door with my other hand the whole time though, the wind was unbelievable.
