  • @sogley : Went the external tank separates the shuttle IS in outer space, but is NOT QUITE at full orbital velocity. the OMS engines (small engines next to the tail) finish boosting the orbiter to full orbital speed. the external tank falls back into the atmosphere over the ocean, and burns up on re-entry. No hazardous debris or meteors hitting the earth. It's designed to burn completely up on re-entry.

  • AZNflipy: From :13 to :21 you are watching the "main engine start sequence". Those three engines are liquid fuel engines, taking their fuel from the big external fuel tank (brown tank) attached to the orbiter's belly. The engines are on swivels for steering, and the three engines are swiveled as far apart as possible when they ignite, to reduce the shock wave (blast) from the initial ignition of the engines. As the engines come up to operating thrust, they are swiveled together for the launch.
