The genome dynamically interacts with the environment as chemical switches that regulate gene expression receive cues from stress, diet, behavior, toxins and other factors. Epigenetics is the study of these reactions and the factors that influence them.

    The epigenome should make you think twice about what role mutations.

  • I was quite happy to see that you draw the DNA right-handed, but immediately after I was sad to see the DNA wrapping around the histone octamer in a right-handed fashion. That is wrong at lest for Eukaryotes where DNA wrapping is left-handed. This aspect is of fundamental importance for DNA supercoiling.

  • @stickinup2188 No it isn't. Evolution happens when things mutate and don't get copied right. If this mutation or change in the DNA is beneficiary, chances are that organism will have a better chance for survival over those without the beneficiary mutation. Over time, the descendants of the original mutant have the mutation as well and reproduce more and the mutation becomes more widely spread throughout that species and changes the species as a whole. Hence, the species is evolved.

  • Well I believe DNA is NOT fixed for life; this is how evolution happens.

  • Epigenetics is changing the way we look at the world. My mind is sprouting with ideas extending from this... for one -- knowing this - now the nucleus is so much more like a brain. I mean if the dna can be flagged that would act as a mechanism of memory. Suddenly now the cell will perceive the world differently based upon its experience.
