A movie about tropical fish becoming parents!

Platys are livebearer fish, which means female deliver live babies (fry). A day or two before she delivered, I put the expectant mother in a livebearer breeder trap. The babies fall through the slits in the floor and are safe from their mother's apetite! Then after a recovery time the mother is released back into the tank.

Aren't those tiny fish cute?

  • this was a great video ....how did you know when she was gonna give birth and how long before she did ..did you lock her up in the hatchery??

  • @ladyjuju69 Thanks! I think I put her in the hatchery about two days before she gave birth, too early probably but it's hard to know the exact time. One thing I have noticed is that just before giving birth the females tend to hide in a corner and not swim around.

  • My molly is about to give birth soon. How do you like the breeder trap?

  • @mercedesff2 It does its purpose. As a matter of fact it is now full with a new batch of fry! It can get dirty when waste settle to the bottom, so I remove it every day (carefully, using a syringe to aspirate or blow the debris through the slits on the side). Also, sometimes the babies will swim back up through the grid while the mother is still there, so they are not all safe. One nice thing about the trap is that you get a good view of what's inside.

I hope all goes well with your molly!

  • i love plays i have 2 green once with a yellow tail ,but for some reason my first 1 still keeps nipping the other 1 and my tank is quit big so they shouldnt run into each other so whats rong can u help

  • @MrGman0909 Chances are one is a male and the other a female... I have heard it is best to have 3 females for each male so each can have a rest! Ask your pet supplier about it.

  • @Nephanee fish are greedy, inconsiderate creatures, and will eat anything and everything. my platy gave birth last night, and was trying to eat them so i had to move her back to the main tank and catch her babies in a net as they fell :')

but yes, a gallon for 4 fish and fry is extremely overcrowded. but i can assure you the fry werent eaten because of stress :)

  • Omg my platy and Molly did that does tht mean my platy is prego??!!?? Plz answer

  • Awesome! How big is your tank?

  • this a wonderful video cute fry

  • Nice video!

  • My friend had 1 male and 3 females, and after one of the females got pregnant and gave birth all of the adults started eating the babies...Do you have any knowledge of why that would happen? They had fish food regularly, but they were in a gallon tank, was it too small and causing them stress?

  • how did u know that she was ready to pop em out?

  • a very nice video =)

  • I love the video. I wasnt gonna get platys because i thougtht it would be a lot of work, but now I have to because I LOVE BABIES TOO!!!
