I want to do this on my boyfriend's Mac. Will this work if your iPod is new and you don't have any songs on it? Also, would I easily be able to download my own songs from the iTunes store, or would I need a separate account for that?

I guess I didn't hear that you were supposed to keep holding shift down while it's opening. I did it and it works. Thanks!

on vista i had to use the RIGHT Shift key instead of Alt.
