I had an install and a service call to do this morning. Have a look at these pictures, on the first few you can see I install a Winegard DS2076 on the edge of the roof. In the background you can see where the DirecTV installer placed his dish. Maybe he thinks that extra few feet in height off the ground will help with the signal from the satellite that's 22500 miles above the equator : )
In the 2nd set of pictures you can see I re-installed this system where it should have been all the time. As low as possible. Here in MN. snow and ice can be a problem, so you want to be able to easily get to the dish. A dish installed on a roof may also flex in the wind causing signal outage, remember FTA satellite dish are bigger than DBS satellite dish, so they do tend to catch the wind a bit more.
If you do HAVE to put a dish on a roof make sure to coat it with Kings Rain Shield, this will keep the worst of the winter weather (Rain and snow) off your dish reflector.
My FTA dish is 2 feet off the ground, tall enough to mow around, short enough for easy access/tuning and snow/ice removal.

most dtv installers put them way out of the way due to tree lines, but usually just for aesthetics.
