This happened to my Tecra M4 4 times and each time was a motherboard replacement as the video card is soldered to the motherboard and overheating fried or unseated teh video graphics GPU
my new toshiba satellite U305 screen also has this problem and only 40% of the screen is visible, i had never open a computer before and don't know where graphic card located at
more than likely a graphics card faliure. graphics card could be loose or damaged. also possble but not very likely screen ribbon connector has become dislodged. remove screen and see if ribbon is secure
If it works on an external monitor the screen itself is f***ed
