I still recommend converting it to a ePub.
Why?
It's annoying to switch back and forth from PDFs and normal books. If transferred, it just saves the file as a book.

@StephanieLisaTara but a lot of parents own iPads and the child is most likely to want to play with the iPad,and a lot of kids do own iPads , the answer yer they are reading your books on iBooks or will be anyway

but in pdf you can't change the font, the fontsize...
update: now you can drag and drop pdf file in ibooks on itunes without converting

@qxrd wait a minute YOU DON'T NEED TO CONVERT TO EPUB ANYMORE, JUST TRANSFER YOUR PDFs TO ITUNES AND THERE YOU GO, I TRIED MINE AND IT WORKED, MUST HAVE BEEN A NEW UPDATE OF THEIR IBOOKS APP, NO POINT OF VIEWING THIS VIDEO.
