If you've been to the Standard Hollywood or Downtown LA lately you may have done a double-take at moving art on the wall of the lobby ya know, the large black man in drag singing a cappella about love and loss and ice cream Only at the Standard... Absolutely.
Leave it to Andre Balazs, hotelier and incorrigible patron of art and pop culture, to show artist Kalup Linzys newest instillation at the Standard Hotels in Los Angeles, one in a series of video art pieces that he will be presenting over the next few months. Its funny, outrageous and a good conversation starter for those of you on the way to the bar.
New York-based artist Kalup Linzy was named a Guggenheim fellow in 2007 and his works have been included in the public collections of The Museum of Modern Art, Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His work focuses on gender, sexuality, race, class and popular culture. Balazs is a true patron of the arts. His hotels are public spaces committed to supporting what is relevant, controversial, aesthetic, beautiful and fun.
