The public was allowed to express their apprehension about a proposed Stage IV Phase II Permit Modification application submitted by Casella Waste Systems, (Casella), for their North Country Environmental Services, (NCES) dump for an one million (1,000,000) ton ten (10) year landfill expansion in Bethlehem NH. Three representatives from Casella and a cooperative entourage from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) deflected apprehension raised at this initial four-hour dump expansion public hearing.
One of the concerns is the asbestos that was knowingly and unknowingly accepted by Casella, which is buried at unidentified locations. (See the "Casella's asbestos location discussed at public input." YouTube video.) Now Casella wants to dig this asbestos back up to build forty foot earth retaining wall around the existing NCES dump perimeter, which goes against the eighteen (18) votes by Bethlehem to not expand the landfill, in an effort to burry an additional one million (1,000,000) tons of waste on top of the three and one half million (3,500,000) tons that are already there. Filmed July 15, 2008.
