Ouch. That's harsh and WRONG. OSX is built on BSD UNIX true (with some higher level proprietary APIs). Linux is a Unix-like operating system. They are very similar but Linux is NOT MacOS under the hood.

when i try to download the installer says it cannot find my ipod. I have a 5.5g 30gig. Vid. what could be wrong

Make sure your iPod is enables for disk use (there is a setting in iTunes that lets you do this) and well, just make sure your iPod is connected and that you're using the right installer.
