This video contains music that never made it to the final commercial release of Chrono Trigger. It is all ripped from the Japanese pre-release demo. You can find it in SPC format at www.snesmusic.org under "Chrono Trigger (Pre-Release)". The demo is available as a dumped ROM image, but I have never played it and I couldn't find much information about the demo so my info on these tracks is pretty sketchy.

[0:00] Unused (Battle Theme)
This uses the melody of "Boss Battle 1". I don't know if it was a battle theme or not, but it sounds like one. (That would make TWO unused battle themes, after "Battle 2" from the CT soundtrack.) Newer versions of the SPC archive call this track "Tyrano Lair", so maybe it was used in the field view there.

[1:30] Unused (Keeper's Dome)
This is a haunting original track. I assume it was used in the Keeper's Dome in 2300 AD.

[3:02] Lavos' Theme (full)
The theme of Lavos, that we all know and love, is looped twice, then a version of "The Day the World Revived" is played.

As noted in the annotations, I overlooked the fact that this was used in the actual final release. It's played when you fight Lavos at the end of the Undersea Palace.

[5:39] Battle 1 alternate
In the Chrono Trigger demo, there are two versions of the regular battle theme. One sounds quite similar to the final version, and this one is much different, using different instruments and more percussion.

[6:41] Unused (Choir)
This is another original track. I don't know why it was cut from the final release; it's beautiful.

  • Isn't the full Lavos theme also used in the real game the first time you hear it in the future while watching that awful video of the year 1999?

  • I believe the short version is used then.

  • Uh-nope. It plays then, as well.

  • Well, shows you how much I know. :-p I need to go back and play the game again, to see some of the endings I never got anyway.

  • I don't know why but this sounds more "Final Fantasy-ish" if anything...Then again that might just be me hearing it weird...But...

  • I like the alternate Battle 1 theme, and I was hoping it would've been included in the Prehistoric time-period part of this game. Too bad it didn't happen, though.

  • @DarkgreenOrange

I first heard it when I did the Lavos Boss Rush after beating the Black Omen.

The full version is used in every instance of the theme in the DS version, though.

  • Battle 1 alternate : Hahah, what the. It's sounds like Blanka's theme mixed with the regular battle theme XD.

  • The full Lavos theme actually plays on two separate occasions in the US release of this game... The first time is when you see that introductory videotape of Lavos destroying the world at Arris Dome in 2300 AD, and the second time is during the boss rush phase during the battle against Lavos.

  • The first song was actually meant to be Boss Battle 2, it was used on zenan bridge and against Masamune, id assume it was also gonna be for Black Tyranno etc. as well.

  • I really like that battle scene version. (Press 7 for it.)

  • First Battle Theme: 2010 (No Lavos) ; Warzone, complete with Modern Military elements, but also has Mecha, possibly early versions of machines like Robo. This is not supposed to be like Terminator, but rather, along the lines of Robots helping Humans fight other Men and Robots.
