For the first time in its history the World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf held its XVI Congress in Durban, South Africa, July 17-24, 2011. The theme of this Conference was: Global Deaf Renaissance from birth to adult-hood.
The Gallaudet South Africa Abroad course was offered in the spring 2011 semester and wass open to students, faculty, staff and alumni.
This course provided participants with a very unique and special opportunity to integrate classroom learning with actual service-learning experiences in South Africa. Students began studying the history and geography of South Africa, while at the same time engaged in political and economic studies to develop context to understand the South Africa experience in general and in particular the experiences of deaf South Africans.
In addition to the lectures, films, and discussions, students also received orientation about the service-learning opportunities, discussions and lectures on international travel logistics, study abroad safety, the social, cultural, educational, environmental and economic issues of South Africa, and the salient issues confronting South Africa's deaf and hard of hearing communities. Students learned South African sign language(s) through practice with instructors and classmates, as well as with deaf South Africans using the sign languages of South Africa.
