When vacationing to Costa Rica, visit one of the many national parks and national park systems as you can. Costa Rica has done an exceptional job with their national park systems. In fact in Southern Costa Rica down on the Osa Peninsula, scientist and arborists have calculated over 500 - 600 rainforest hardwood trees, and tropical tree species. Much of Costa Rica has been deforested, however over 60% of their total land is protected and mostly primary forest. Commercial logging has been minimized, however illegal logging is still active in Costa Rica, especially in Southern Costa Rica, where you'll find the tall mountains and tallest trees in Central America above Dominical, Drake Bay, Puerto Jimenez, Osa and Golfito. I recommend hiking and visit the jungle and the pristine beaches of Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica. Great Zip Line and canopy tours and hiking near Puerto Jimenez hotels and beaches. In fact right in Puerto Jimenez, there are several fabulous primary trees hovering above the dusty gold mine. Rainforest hardwood trees are temperate by nature, and have no tree rings whatsoever and the top soil in a typically only a few inches deep. Tropical rainforest hardwood trees, such as the Kapok, Monkey Pod, Iron Wood, and Ceiba Rainforest Trees derive their moisture from the rain and canopy. In fact, Central American Rainforest are endangered, and their importance lies in the fact that trees create oxygen, and last time I checked, we need air to breath. Trees are critical to slowing down global warming in both Central America and Costa Rica. Under the canopy, you'll generally find palm, palms and banana trees and mono cultures such as palm oil, banana and pineapple plantations.
