Freshwater refugium? Tell me if this could work.

Do you think this could work? What plants should I add too help with nitrates? Let me know if it can function as a good filter for a 55 gallon freshwater tank.

It will totally work, Iv actually done a few hang on the tank refugiums before with success. There very efficient at reducing nitrates, the bigger they are and the more plants they have the more nitrates it will be capable of breaking down. I currently run a 55 gallon Refugium on a 72 gallon bowfront. Even with over 100fish and 400ish shrimp It will maintain 0ppm nitrates so I have to dose nitrates up to 10ppm for the plants.
