Buona Vista Secondary School was located between Commonwealth Crescent and Holland Close. It was established in 1967. At that time work on the HDB flats near the school premises had just started. The Chip Bee Garden Housing Estate was originally occupied by British military personnel and their families until the early 1970s when the British wihdrew their troops from Singapore. When the school first started in January 1967, it was known as Chip Bee Secondary, named after the housing estate. However, the name was changed to the present one on the eve of the official opening ceremony on 5th July 1968. It was declared open by Dr Lee Chiaw Meng, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education, on the evening of 6th July 1968. BVSS was unique as it was one of the three government schools which conducted classes in the English, Chinese and Malay streams. The trilingual was in existence for about 16 years. The school contributed significantly to the community at Commonwealth, instiling in its students the importance of caring for the elderly and the less fortunate.
