"New Kid In Town", written by Don Henley, Glenn Frey and J.D. Souther, is a song by United States rock group Eagles from their 1976 album Hotel California, and the first to feature guitarist Joe Walsh, who had just replaced Bernie Leadon. It was released as the first single from the album, and became a #1 hit in the USA, and #20 in the UK. The single version of the song has an earlier fade-out than the album version does. On 26 February 1977, it reached the Billboard #1. The song features Frey singing the lead vocals, with Don Henley singing main harmony vocals. Randy Meisner plays the guitarrón mexicano, and Joe Walsh plays the electric piano and organ parts.
In 1977, the Eagles won a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement for Voices with "New Kid In Town".

On Henley's first solo album, I Can't Stand Still, he references the song by singing the line, "there's a new kid in town" over the rideout of Johnny Can't Read.

LYRICS:

There's talk on the street; it sounds so familiar
Great expectations, everybody's watching you
People you meet, they all seem to know you
Even your old friends treat you like you're something new

Johnny come lately, the new kid in town
Everybody loves you, so don't let them down

You look in her eyes; the music begins to play
Hopeless romantics, here we go again
But after awhile, you're lookin' the other way
It's those restless hearts that never mend

Johnny come lately, the new kid in town
Will she still love you when you're not around?
There's so many things you should have told her,
but night after night you're willing to hold her,
Just hold her, tears on your shoulder

There's talk on the street, it's there to
Remind you, that it doesn't really matter
which side you're on.
You're walking away and they're talking behind you
They will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along
Where you been lately? There's a new kid in town
Everybody loves him, don't they?
Now he's holding her, and you're still around
Oh, my, my
There's a new kid in town
just another new kid in town
Ooh, hoo
Everybody's talking 'bout the new kid in town,
Ooh, hoo
Everybody's walking' like the new kid in town
There's a new kid in town
Theres a new kid in town people started walking
There's a new kid in town
I don't want to hear it
There's a new kid in town
I don't want to hear it
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town
There's a new kid in town

  • @racourdav Chill dude please :) This just reminds me of family holidays I had in the SW of Scotland in the 70's. Our families could not afford to go abroad. I remember dad and uncle Marty playing Eagles and Doobie Brothers songs into the night and drinking beer around the camp fire. My dear uncle Marty passed away in 2000 aged 57 but he was the coolest dude ever and the greatest music fan. He had worked in Denmark, Norway, Vancouver, San Diego. If I can be half the man he was I am doing well :)

  • they didn't sell coronas in akron in 1977 (thank god)- we had to suffer with carlings or labatt's.....and 3.2% busch on sundays. in california, we use coronas to kill fleas on the dog. a six will kill all the fleas on my 70-pound choweiler cisco. cheaper than a good canine pyrithrin shampoo and it doesn't leave an insecticide residue (i hope...). thumbs up if 'new kid' was your fave hotel cali song in the 70's.

  • Maybe the best Eagles song ever.

  • Nice

  • Sometimes at this flea market in my town the guy selling guitars plays this song and I sing along as walk through the building. Freaking love this song.

  • Its been years since I have heard this. We use to sneak into Vale Lake resort in California. It was closed and abandoned way back then but there was a break in the fence that few knew about. We would play all day and the adults would be trashed by sun down. Around a camp fire my step dad and his brothers would all play and sing this together. RIP uncle Larry and "O".

  • bad ass song

  • This song makes me think about things. A girl I loved. New kid came and held her. I'm still around...

  • There's something about The Eagles that just reminds me of summers in the Rust Belt. Good old working class folks.
