The distance was especially a problem before I started using the Boom stand, but even with the 6-12 inches, you can still hear all the the background noise. Don't get me wrong, I love the mic and I love the quality, but I need a more quiet place to record. XD

re: the flashing clock...the 'digits' are cycling at 60 hz (60 times/sec) while your camera is more then likely capturing at 30fps and its not 'timed' to the clocks cycle, causing a 'strobe' effect. Happens on almost anything that cycles, ie. helicopter blades, fans, car wheels (hence that 'backward spin' look in videos.) Its also the reason why 'talent' avoids thin stripes on camera. Its also the principle on which strobe light recording works to 'stop' movement.
