An estimated 80 percent of Egyptian women wear Islamic head coverings, and the numbers are growing. But, in Egypt, if you wear a head covering -- the most common is called a higab -- some high-end Cairo restaurants choose not to serve you. Owners say the policy is a sign of respect for piety since they also serve alcohol, banned in Islam. However, many women who cover their heads argue that the policy is discrimination. Jessica Desvarieux reports for VOA in Cairo.

  • Wonderful video.Check out BFABP.com for more resources

  • The Muslims who r serving other muslims do not wanna serve them something haram coz a part of the punishment would b on them. And I'm sure that if the bouncers or waiters could identify Muslim men they wouldn't serve them either

    Ps they said hijab wrong

  • Excuse me but they r entitled to wear wateva they want and wear it wherever they want

  • what is this bitches problem? Dont wear that ugly piece of shit and go wherever you want retarded religious woman

  • @coquinat I think they should be free if they want to enter. In Brooklyn once I went to a place like this to use the restroom and inside was one giant sausage party. NO Thank You!!!

  • If it was about the ban of alcohol in Islam, then religious muslim men would also be banned from the bar and clubs right? I think it's about excluding women from these public places.

  • @caitlinisreggaegirl Saying they shouldn't be entering the place anyway makes the discrimination justified. They're just targetting muslim women, not muslim men.

  • Aww, cry about discrimination from outside the religion but never adress the discrimination from within the religion itself. How cute.

  • Sorry, you shouldn't be denied entrance to a restaurant, night club, or anywhere. But, if you are wearing hijab, you should not be going to a club anyway!!! duh

  • Well that's very nice mixing Lord Buddha with alcohol. Then they will ask to respect their religion. What they did in that so called Buddha bar and having a Buddha image is such a disrespect for the Buddhism tradition. Shame on you people!!
