I suspect that some form of lighter than air can travel as fast as airplanes. Remember that from the passengers perspective the speed is how long it takes to get from one place to another. Being able to take off and land from many more locations closer to where people want to be can make a light than air vehicle much quicker over all, especially for shorter flights.

@MarkProffitt do you know how often a plane is taken over, or crashes in the usa? your more likley to crash a car than crash a plane, and the only possible human mistake is turning a dial wrong, and since there are at least 3 pilots in a cockpit. some one always corrects it, auto pilot flys you there, and the pilots only adjust course and land, sometimes they don't even land. its all done by a highly programed and examined computer. planes are safe, durigibles are to, but how fast can one go?

@transformerskid567 Airlines companies will look pretty silly claiming a soft light than air that doesn't need a running start to get off the ground is less safe than jets that crash into building acting like missiles or crash into the river when taking off. Especially with demonstrations of multiple bladder kevlar shot with a machine gun flying perfectly or the beloved icon Good Year blimp. Extreme sports fans might prefer the "risk". Fear was used against automobiles and failed miserably.

@MarkProffitt good point, but people will remember, its gonna be really hard to get people to hop on. i'm sure that the various airline companys will televize "worst possible case scenarios".

@transformerskid567 The Hindenburg was designed to use helium but during the war the USA banned selling helium to Germany so they used hydrogen instead. That is why it exploded. Also there are better materials and designs today that would limit the affects of any failures such as kevlar and carbon fiber, plus using dozens of smaller bladders to hold the gas. gas tank explosions kills people yet you dont see people stop driving there cars.

@xavierbaudet I don't think, so the hindenburg pretty much put commercial flight by blimp out of everyones minds. that and they don't do well at high altitudes like in colorado.

we have already done blimps and judging by what happened to the hindenberg the idea went out with a bang and hundreds of lives so your idea could be a great toy but never a form of transportation.
