The 2009 Powell Lecture, Polymer Electronics for Chemical and Biological Sensors, was given by Timothy M. Swager, head of the Department of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Swager is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Chemistry in MITs Department of Chemistry. His research interests are in design, synthesis and the study of organic-based electronic, sensory and liquid crystalline materials. In this lecture, he discusses the conceptual design and optimization of chemical/biological sensors based upon conjugated polymers (CPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).

The W. Allan Powell Lectureship in Chemistry has been held annually since 1988 and is hosted by the University of Richmond and the Virginia Section of the American Chemical Society. The Powell Lectureship was established to honor Dr. W. Allan Powell who served the University for 34 years, 23 of which he chaired the chemistry department.
