In its research and contributions to public and policy debates the Alfred Deakin Research Institute drew inspiration from the many nation-building achievements of Alfred Deakin, three times Prime Minister and the outstanding figure in the first decade of Australia's federation.

Generally, and from the second half of the twentieth century, in particular, one of the great forces behind Australia's nation-building has been immigration.

This prominent group of leading minds convened to discuss and debate multiculturalism and immigration -- explored interrelated issues such as immigration's educational, social, political and economic effects, and attempt richer contextualisation of Australia's experience of immigration.

Panel members included:

* The Hon. Dr Barry Jones AO -- writer, author, lawyer, broadcaster and former Labor minister
* Professor Fazal Rizvi -- academic and author in the fields of philosophy, education and public policy, global studies, racism and multicultural education, Australia--Asia relations and contemporary youth cultures
* Dr Benjamin Isakhan -- author and international expert on Middle East policy and politics, culture and communication, democracy, Iraq, Islam and global media
* Professor David Lowe -- Director of the Alfred Deakin Research Institute, historian, co-founder of the 'Australian Policy and History network' and member of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Editorial Advisory Board.
