Composed by Vincent Kusuma (he's at the end!!!). March 30th, 2011. Composers Concert at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
"Theme and Variations for Piano Quintet is an exercise in motivic development. This piece utilizes a 4-note motive (B, E, D-sharp, G) to form 5 variations that are laid out in 3 sections. The piece begins with a heavy octave statement of the motive followed closely by the first variation, which has a dark, march-like ostinato. The second variation is a moto perpetuo. It is very difficult to execute because the sixteenth-note lines are passed back and forth between instruments. The third variation marks the middle section with its lugubrious rhythm under a melancholic melody based on the 4-note motive. This motive blossoms into a miniature climax that leads directly to the fourth variation. The fourth variation, which is an inversion of the main motive, is introduced by the piano alone, representing a wispy dream that is fading away. A grievous reaction follows suit, driving the music back to a return of the melancholic third variation. The third section of the piece is a fugue that begins quietly and gradually builds toward a fortissimo climax. Near the end of this section, the piano enters with an augumented version of the fourth variation. The music ends with a single statement of the fourth variation over a first inversion G chord, unfulfilled but cathartic."
