Ornithology Terry Clarke/Phil Woods 1959

In 1959 under the leadership of Quincy Jones a musical show was cris crossing Europe with an all star Cast. The dancers and singers were backed up by a fine team of jazz musicians. The show went eventually bankrupt but the musicians travelled for further arrangements and went through the Netherlands as well. Under the name Fancy Free they were recorded for one of the Dutch broadcasting companies.
The band plays Ornithology. You see and hear Clark Terry on trumpet and fluegelhorn, Phil Woods on alto sax, Sahib Shihab tenor sax, Quentin Jackson trombone, Patty Bown piano, Buddy Catlett bass, Joe Morris drums

  • I believe its Bari sax not tenor sax for sahib shihab in the info

  • @GassyMaskz

I think he made it his own. its got an interesting tone. different from parker in a neat way.

  • Phil Woods - wow ! Dynamite!

  • I'm overjoyed to have found so many videos of the fifties-sixties jazz greats, with even a fine sound here at Youtube. the great prophets of jazz were way under-appreciated in the USA, so to earn livings many moved to or toured hugely in Europe, where what? They've more time or education there to appreciate somewhat complex music?

  • i don't like the alto interpertation of the melody.... anyone else.

  • @gnembhard thanks a million for the info. stuff like that fascinates me. she was absolutely killing!

  • @timreyes58 - Patti Brown recorded @ least one solo album after leaving Quincy Jones' band. She played with Oliver Nelson & Rashaan Roland Kirk, who also played w/Quincy. I kinda got the sense that record companies @ the time shyed away from black female musicians, since black female vocalists like Sarah, Ella, Dinah & Billie seemed to be the norm. Patti was actually one of TWO in Q's band; trombonist, Melba Liston was the other. I think she passed away recently, but I'm not sure.

  • Does anyone have anu info on the pianist? Shes killing!

  • i guess she checked out horace silver and also monk, listen to straight no chaser !

  • Lol, that IS an SBA crook!!
