@jrausch19 too bad it fell down: now Germany is full of Neo-Nazis because the Soviet Union didn't finish cleansing the country. It would be so much easier on the world if the Soviet Union napalmed Germany until it turned to glass.

A very misleading comment. While both sides did, in fact, attempt to discourage defections, West Germany NEVER forbade emigration. East Germany, like all of the Soviet satellites, did. People in the Western nations were free to travel. People in the Communist East were not. Just as today, the free nations of the West were more concerned about too many people trying to enter than they were about too many people trying to leave.
