This song was a razor sharp criticism of the Irish state at that time. Not a song that any Irish person would regard as being "In your favour"

Geldof wrote this song about the Republic of Ireland- He calls it the "Bannana Republic". "Septic Isle" Its nothing to do with South America but he does make reference to the North.

"Striking up the Soldiers Song" refers to the Irish national anthem. Which translates to that in English.

"Police and Priests" Refers to the rigid control of the Irish State and the Catholic Church.

Wasn't this song more about Geldof, as a Dubliner, having issues with the corruption of the Irish Republic and the way collusion between bent politicians of the Charles Haughey sort and priests of the child-abusing kind (supported by a supine police force more interested in beating the shite out of young poor Dubliners like Geldof) was creating a Third World country on the fringes of Europe?
