Greatest at virtuoso jazz. We cannot forget Billy Taylor, Marian McPartland, and the likes of George Shearing. Everyone had a personal way of expression.
-
Other pianists prefer to stop and smell the roses.

That's their culture/heritage. It's a personal thing. Some folk even Americans prefer to sit still while others prefer physical display of emotional expressions.

Although I like admiring Oscar and Art...I think they were playing in a competitive manner. These styles were developed by guys who played rent parties. They played all night to raise rent money. So they had to outdo their counterparts. There so many guys playing different styles that we can admire besides getting bogged down with guys who play at break neck speeds!
