José Van Dam, Belgian baritone sings
Chanson romanesque from song cycle
Don Quichotte à Dulcinée by Maurice Ravel
Trois poèmes de Paul Morand

Piano: Dalton Baldwin

Chanson romanesque

Moderato

Romantic Song
dedicated to Robert Cousinou

If you were to tell me that the earth
with all its turning, offended you,
I would dispatch (Sancho) Panza there;
you would see it fixed and silent.

If you were to tell me that you grew annoyed
of a sky too flowery with stars,
destroying the divine order,
I would sweep the night away with one blow.

If you were to tell me that space
thus emptied, did not please you,
knight of God, lance in hand,
I would stud stars into the wind as it passes.

But if you said that my blood
is more mine than yours, my Lady,
I would blanch at the reproach,
and I would die, blessing you.

Oh, Dulcinea.

  • With all my respect,Monsieur Van Dam!

  • @Laurinhaimbire

and definitely his noble way of singing

  • thanks for posting! I'm so tired of people saying how"artistic" and "musical" Souzay's version is. Van Dam has a glorious voice and is a fine musician.

  • um, gorgeous much?

  • José van Dam + Maurice Ravel = la grande classe...

  • Très beau!

  • Beautiful, thank you

  • van Dam is a great artist. He is, however, not a baritone, but a bass-baritone--

  • Don Quichotte à Dulcinée was the last work that Ravel was able to compose before he succumbed to his illness.

  • This man really sings!
