Betjeman sailed through life as a jobbing journalist and poet but always felt a nagging fear that he could have done more with his talent. The Song of a Nightclub Proprietress, alternatively known as Sun 'n Fun, though written in 1954, presages his final years. He suffered Parkinson's Disease and drank champagne constantly to keep awareness of his infirmity at bay. The protagonist of this poem has an amazingly similar history.
This is wonderful. :D exactly how this song should be performed
