BELO MONTE dam #1 (STPI side event - Cochabamba, Bolivia)

The Society for Threatened Peoples International (STPI) organised a side event about the hydroelectric dam Belo Monte, that took place at the World Peoples Conference on Climate Change and Mother Earth Rights, along with a large number of co-sponsors, NGOs and indigenous organisations that are working with communities that are impacted by the construction of large hydroelectric dams. The Belo Monte dam would be one of the largest dams in the world.

Note: One statement of a speaker is incorrect, it is not a fact that 25 indigenous communities would be expulsed from their land by the dam's construction. 2 IT (indigenous territories) The Xingu River's Volta Grande ( Big Bend) would be reduced to merely a trickle of water, that would impact the Arara and Juruna that live there. Also the Bacaja River's water level, feeding into the Xingu, the homeand territory (IT) of Kaypo Xicrin, is estimated to be severely reduced, which would impact the Xikrin. The image of the indigenous village shows the Alto Xingu, another region that is affected by small scale hydro electric dams, and not Belo Monte.

The Sociedade Internacional para os Povos Ameaçados (STPI) organizou um evento paralelo sobre a Usina Hidrelétrica Belo Monte, que teve lugar na Conferência Mundial dos Povos sobre Mudança do Clima e da Mãe Terra de Direitos, juntamente com um grande número de co-patrocinadores , ONGs e organizações indígenas que estão trabalhando com as comunidades que são impactadas pela construção de grandes hidrelétricas. A represa de Belo Monte seria uma das maiores represas do mundo.

Stop the dams.We need the forests in the Amazon just as much as the dozen Indians need it for survival. There's ways to create energy with wind and sun that need not involve drowning such a huge area of ancient forests.
