super 8 film
Maudie is our first film and first super 8 film. We did this when we were students in Visual Arts at QUT Brisbane. We didn't have any idea how to use the camera (Beaulieu 5008s) we just had to guess. We made lots of mistakes, had fun and learnt so much! A big lesson was focus, what happens when you use too much light and that these camera's battery actually needs charging and that an unleaded generator that we were using to power everything does'nt get filled with diesel! This was an amazing experience for all of us involved. When the film came back it was over exposed and out of focus on one side we just had to work with it which of course made it a better film. We only knew little bits but did a wall telecine of the film and when it came time to edit had to teach ourselves the basic stuff and used to sneak in to uni(the library where they had non linear facilities) when the door was open by someone else and if no one caught us we stayed there all night and the next day.
The only way we knew how to do the sound was to record it onto VHS tape and then to dub that tape live onto the vhs tape with the vision.
This film went on to recieve the Jan Manton Graduating Art Award 1997 and showed at the Institute of Modern Art Brisbane and the Perth Institute of Modern Art 1998. It was purchased by Eat Carpet for a three year showing 2000-2003.
