This video will show you how to use the built in source recorder in Garry's Mod. It also works with Half-life 2, Episode One and Two, Portal, CS:S etc.
You will want to download and install the Xvid codec. Its a very nice codec and gives good compression while keeping quality.

This method is also used in some emulators, such as Dolphin and DeSmuME. However, playability during the recording time cannot be maintained because actions cannot be recorded to memory (runs slow). Reason being is because gmod is very controlled and the game code running in an emulator can't be controlled in this way. This means that if actions WERE to be recorded to memory, the result would most likely turn out to be different because of some random variable (such as AI or physics).
The reason the game runs slower during recording is because encoding the video (in this case, to Xvid) consumes CPU time, and gmod is not able to run at full speed without degrading the output video by either reducing the frame rate, bit rate, or image dimensions. In other words, something must be done to reduce CPU usage invoked by the video encoder. So instead of reducing the video quality, the game in turn runs slower to allow the video encoder enough time to maintain maximum quality.
Excellent, gmod uses the technique of framedumping in nonreal time while maintaining usability when recording. It supposably does this by recording your actions, information about the environment, and other details to memory in order to reproduce the scene exactly as it happened during recording. Then, after setting up the recording options, it executes the stored commands and renders the results to an AVI video with as much time as needed to draw the results at a full frame rate.
I did everything in order to record it to an Avi file. At first it wouldnt work, but i managed to sort it out. Now when i follow the exact same steps, when i type in Playdemo i get an Hl2.exe Error!!! and it just crashes. Please help me! i beg of you! anyone i will give you lots of credits and praise you for life!
Wth !? Like a month ago I tried that just like you did but my video was soo laggy :s and I gave up because all the other movies on youtube for recording someth with your console are so bad.. What's my problem?
