100 Wings encapsulates humanity's fascination with flight, which has remained unchanged since the beginning of time. The ethereal nature associated with wings has inspired many; representing for them love and victory, of dreams and of movement.

They have become a personification of the idea of freedom such as a means of escaping from mortal distress. Wings have become a symbol for lightness, liberation, hope and aspiration, and ascent to heaven. From angels to dragons, they have been depicted in the strife between good and evil. They propel us to freedom where we can be set free from our daily worries, and life-changing decisions.

Just like the angels with broken wings or lack thereof, we lose ourselves in disillusionment before we begin to reflect on the fragility of humanity along with our mortal desires stemming from our internal emotional void. As humans, we often sink into the depths of self-pity, being too comfortable in our own misery that we are unable to get out of that self-created isolation, even when our loved ones are trying so desperately to reach out to us. We dwell on the need to possess the people we love without realising that this act alone strains the very bond we try so arduously to protect and perfect. The situation is apparent in everyday life but we fail to take a step back and look objectively at what is happening to our worlds. It is only when a loss of great magnitude, usually resulting in the loss of a loved one, triggers the bewilderment that eventually leads to soul searching within ourselves.

Ultimately 100 Wings is the celebration of life as showcased by ten young artists from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in their exploration of different embodiments of Wings in everyday living as artists. As participants of the cycle of life and death, their works attempt to unravel the challenges and redemption that lead us to cherish the world we live in.
