Since the 9/11 attacks, many have come to see Islam as synonymous with terrorism. But Shamsi Ali, head imam at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, thinks otherwise. Film@11 Correspondent Connor Kiesel sits down with Imam Ali to hear his views on terrorism, democracy and last but not least, hip hop music.

  • Vogigewi

  • Listening to islamic songs or reciting a verse from The holy quran is good to hear, isnt it? Islamic artists like sami yusuf for example?

  • @jollyroger718 listen. you cant just state it as a fact. imam ghazali, a incredibly respected scholar among scholars did not deny that the issue on music is debatable. the word 'music' didnt even exist in the arabic language at time of the prophet (saw). if idle talks indeed was refering to "music" it would have to be refering to a certain type of event that contained music.. singing girls etc.

  • Both singing and dancing are Haraam. Allaamah ibni Katheer records a narration in his Tafseer under verse 6 of Surah Luqmaan: And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks… Sayyidina Abdullah ibni Mas'ood (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) was asked regarding the meaning of idle talks. He answered thrice under oath that it refers to music. (Tafseer ibni Katheer V6 P330). This is also the verdict of other scholars of that time, including Sayyidina Hasan Basri (Rahmatullaahi Alayh).

  • Sayyidina Abu Maalik Al Ash'ari (Radhiyallaahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said: Some people among my Ummah will consume alcohol whilst giving it another name. Their gatherings will consist of music and dancing girls. Allah will let the earth swallow them and some of them will be transformed into apes and swine. (Sunan ibni Maajah V2 P1333). May Allah Ta'aala save us. Aameen.

  • @imaan2 and second of all you cant just go calling him ignorant when the issue of music is debated all the time. its a DEBATABLE issue.. and why? since music isnt mentioned in the quran and like the imam sed himself.. the word music didnt even exist back then.

  • @imaan2 do us a favour and quote mohammed saw saying that.. a legit hadith please.

  • No disrespect, this imam in my view has no knowledge of Islam.

Mohammed SAW has clearly mentioned listening to music causes hypocrisy to grow in one's heart just as water causes the trees to grow.

SO he should be very careful when he says there is nothing is wrong with listening ot music.

He should rahter go leran about knowledge of Islam rahter than being an ignorant Muslim.
