Winston Churchill's favourite cartoonist David Low stayed here during the war , he drew caricatures of the owner of the Sqare&Compass and guest which used to hand on the wall.
A small ship went aground near by, it took weeks for the skipper to report it as he was drinking scrumpy in the pub.

During WW2 artists from London used to "escape" to here like cartooniist, the walls are graced with some of their work,
