I wrote a quick script for autohotkey (freeware) which will randomly choose a frequency to boost or cut.
Close your eyes, hit a key, try to guess the correct frequency, check, repeat.

You might be surprised how bad your hearing actually is (well I was ;))
but it gets better with practice.

This is just a quick video I threw together, if you want me to make a nicer looking (or more detailed version), let me know!

You can download an exe file with the script from the video here: http://bit.ly/eqeartraining
You don't need to have AHK installed for it to work.

P.S.: Autohotkey is free, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AutoHotkey for details. It can be downloaded from:
http://www.autohotkey.com/download/

You'll find documentation in several languages here:
http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/

Note: I use Reaper in this example video, the autohotkey script is easily adjustable, so it'll work in different DAWs/EQs of course. You can view the script here: http://pastie.org/487268

  • It looks interesting. Ok... how do I go about setting up the autohotkey for pro tools... or fl studio... or even pink noise generators?

  • The same script would work for all kinds of programs. AHK's "send" function (line 23 in the script..) sends the random frequency to the sequencer's highlighted entry form (right where the cursor is, actually) -- to the sequencer it looks just like you're punching the numbers in manually. :)

  • OK... but I need more info. I saw the code on the link to pastie... I need to know how to install autohotkey, and if SCITE4Autohotkey helps in developing other codes?

  • I have never worked with scite4, but ahk's helpfile is pretty helpful, and there's lots of good documentation available in different languages, even on their homepage. once you get the hang of it, you should be able to do some wicked stuff.

  • how can i get that program

  • there's links when you click on "more info". or just type "autohotkey" into your favorite search engine.
