Gaspar Sanz (1640--1710) was Bachelor of Theology at the University of Salamanca. His baptism name was Francisco Bartolome Sanz y Celma.
Sanz wrote three volumes of pedagogical works for guitar: 'Instrucción de Música sobre la Guitarra Española' (1674), 'Libro Segundo de Cifras sobre la Guitarra Española' (1675) and 'Libro Tercero de Música de Cifras sobre la Guitarra Española' (1697).
In 1697, the three books were published in one volume, named 'Instrucción de Música sobre la Guitarra Española y metodo de sus primeros rudimenteros, hasta teñerla con destreza' (Musical Instruction for the Spanish Guitar and method of the primary rudiments for playing it with dexterity).
'Canarios' (Canaries) is a Renaissance dance originated at the Canary Islands that became very popular at the Baroque era. Its main rhythmic characteristic is an alternation of compound binary and simple ternary meters: 6/8 - 3/4. In his 'Instrucción de Música sobre la Guitarra Española', Sanz added some Canaries dances tuned in D, G and A.
Originally written for the Baroque five-orders guitar, 'Canarios' is played here by Fernando Lewis de Mattos on the Brazilian country viola (viola caipira).
