Title: 'Last Night a DJ Kidnapped Mallow'
by Skrypnyk
ReMix of 'Sad Song'
Video Game: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Skrypnyk writes: "This originally started out as a tribute/experiment to Kid Koala and his style, and then I started getting inspiration from DJ Shadow and Boards of Canada inspiration (with a dash whatever the hell I do.) Originally started working on it last year (or early this year), then forgot about it, then finished it."
I'm only really familiar with Endtroducing..., but I definitely hear the DJ Shadow influence, and this piece compares really favorably imo. Andrew resubbed this based on judge feedback with a new title and melodic changes. Mr. Aversa says: "I'm always impressed by Skrypnyk's drum programming skills - while his work on "Back 2 Skala" is fantastic, the programming here is absolutely top-notch. The main groove is killer, but all the detailed fills, record scratches, and effects make it truly a standout. Production overall is ace, too. Combine all that with a highly interpretive (but not too liberal!) arrangement and you've got an awesome remix. Good job Skryp."
The ReMixer does an excellent job channeling his stated inspirations, and the melody REALLY works well, stylistically - it has a maudlin melancholy that feels simultaneously futuristic and antiquated, hypnotizing at length and then breaking out with an unexpected scratch or cut. Makes me wanna check out Kid Koala, as I'm definitely a fan of downtempo grooves that still manage to sound edgy and slightly... disturbing. The arrangement here is definitely liberal, but remains identifiable. Shariq says: "Rather groovy and cerebral. I love that smooth Rhodes and the contrast with the percussion. Very tricky stuff. Science lesson voice clips are always fun. Fantastic drum programming."
Speaking of science lessons, and the cerebral, I've been reading On Intelligence lately, and it's a fascinating read, definitely recommended. Great stuff from Mr. Skrypnyk; what his surname lacks in traditional vowels, his music makes up for in a broad palate of musical colors that are striking and enveloping. ― djpretzel

  • Found it pretty weird in the beginning, but actually it's pretty awesome ^_^

  • I agree, when I first heard it, it seemed highly unusual and weird. Being that it's weird, it peaked my interest and then found a nice groove and enticed me further. So I figured, why not upload this well worked piece.
