first time through lain, ep. 5 was a little dissapointing after the sheer freaking awesomeness of ep. 4. hoping it picks up again.

Perhaps we're overthinking the whole thing. Not all series like this are meant to be 'understood' in the complete sense. You just enjoy the style and feel.

I tried to watch this a few years ago and gave up on episode 5. For some reason, it seems easier to get through this time. I'm eager to see how it all turns out.
